In the 90s, every child – and their mum – had jelly shoes or, as they were called in South Africa, “Jelly Babies”. Gucci is bringing back the childhood trend, but it will cost you R7,500.

Yes, you read that right, the luxury Italian brand is selling women’s jelly sandals for $490.

These transparent jelly sandals by Gucci are available in black, white, orange and purple.

Reminiscent of playful ’90s styles, this sandal is presented in orange rubber with a clear finish. The shoe is distinguished by tonal Double G hardware and the Maison’s name on the back of the ankle strap, creating a connection to the trendy logomania that characterized this era,” Gucci says on its website.

Stars such as Blake Lively have been spotted wearing their jelly sandals. But for R7,500, most people on social media said it was a tough pass for them.

“Not gucci stealing jelly sandals off sale and selling them for over $400. I used to hate those fkn shoes growing up. I would have a callus on my foot. I wanted to fight my mom at most low.”

Here’s a look at what others had to say on Twitter.

Gucci is likely to be indifferent to hate. The brand’s rubber slide sandals have been selling like hot cakes in 2021. The shoes, which retail for nearly R6,000, have been a big hit with influencers and socialites around the world.

Someone call the fashion police, cause this must be a fashion crime!
