Industry Loop – Message of Appreciation
Relax TF! The Namibian National Association of the Deaf just needs to relax TF!
Wow, bruh, are you serious right now? It’s comedy, for Hage’s sake! I swear to my ancestors that I couldn’t believe that King Gucci and his sketches made the front page of a whole newspaper just because Paul Nanyeni and his pals don’t have a sense of humor.
And don’t get me wrong, I love that King Gucci made the headlines. I would be a hypocrite not to like that. For years I have called for the arts to be included in national news.
King Gucci did it! It’s a victory for the whole industry in fact. Because of King Gucci, the arts have been in the spotlight all week! It’s a lot for our little known industry.
You know this country is in trouble when the Namibian National Association of the Deaf tends to “call out” comedians.
You know this country is a ticking time bomb when other comedians see fit to join the Namibian National Association of the Deaf to “call in” the comedians.
You know we have problems as people when we can no longer tell the difference between mockery and comedy. What’s weird is that on the pitch – as a people – we like to talk shit; we like to make fun of each other – whether at work, at the car wash, at church, etc. We like bante, or in street dialect, “gwara”. Gwara is as old as time when it comes to the Namibian way of life. How the hell did we get here, where we are now so offended by our own way of life?
It comes back again to how we don’t want to respect our own. Namibians will laugh at the material of foreign comedians like Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, etc., but as soon as it comes home we want to be ‘outraged’. It’s f**king amazing actually. How stupid can we be as people? No, really, think about it. At one point, Anne Kansiime was so popular in this country that she was booked for a show in Windhoek.
Trevor Noah was in Namibia, along with many other foreign comedians. We packed these shows.
Today, King Gucci is doing a sketch and no one cares. Are you kidding me? We attach more importance to the foreigner than to our own. We seek validation from strangers. It’s sad. If it had been a foreign comedian, that would never have been a problem. We would have all had our laughs and moved on.
To my surprise, other comedians joined in the “joke” to condemn King Gucci. Are you making fun of me? I can only conclude that perhaps when answering questions about the supposed saga, Chicken and Tafish were not well informed about the current situation. They are gentlemen whom I respect when it comes to their profession. I support King Gucci.
I stand with all the other creatives who push the boundaries. Life is already hard like that. Good God, not everything has to be serious. This is why the arts are important. We seem to forget how important art played in keeping everyone sane when the whole world was locked down not so long ago. The Namibian National Association of the Deaf just needs to relax and so does anyone who wants to spoil the fun of some of us who choose to smile instead of frown. Until the next Loop, we say #GMTM
