Chanel exhibition makes international debut in Melbourne

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is preparing to host the Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion manifesto exhibition in Australia in December.

The exhibition, which was developed by the Palais Galliera, makes its international debut at the NGV and is the first exhibition in Australia to focus exclusively on the significant contribution to twentieth-century fashion culture by renowned French fashion designer Gabrielle Chanel (1883-1971).

Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion manifesto presents more than 230 items of clothing, accessories and jewelry taken from the Palais Galliera and Chanel Heritage collections in Paris, supplemented by loans from major public museums and private collections.

NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM praised the launch of the exhibition.

“There is no bigger name in twentieth century fashion design than Gabrielle Chanel.

“Its originality, timelessness and elegance have forged a radically modern vision of fashion and a unique style.

The exhibition is presented through a series of chronological and thematic sections, exploring Chanel’s design codes through fashion, perfume, jewelry and accessories.

Highlights include early examples of his use of black to evoke modernity and chic; delicate lace dresses; wool jersey and tweed suit suits; dazzling beaded clothing; and, daring costume jewelry.

Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson added that the exhibition will also give a much needed boost to the local economy.

“The Melbourne people love their fashion, so it’s only fitting that Gabrielle Chanel.

“Fashion Manifesto is making its first international debut right here in Melbourne after its Paris premiere.

“Exhibits of this caliber attract visitors from across the country, boosting local tourism and strengthening Victoria’s position as a creative state,” he said.

Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion manifesto will be exhibited at NGV International, Melbourne, from December 4, 2021 to April 25, 2022.

The exhibition will be celebrated during the NGV Gala on Saturday 19 February 2022.
